The V6 hybrid powertrain in the Ferrari 296 GTB/GTS has proven to be a game-changer, offering impressive performance and flexibility. With a sprint time of just 2.9 seconds from 0-100km/h and reaching 200km/h in 3.7 seconds longer, the 296 GTB/GTS showcases remarkable acceleration capabilities. At full throttle, whether the roof is up or down, the vehicle can reach a top speed of 330km/h.

The Ferrari 296 GTS provides the enjoyment of open-air motoring while maintaining the exceptional performance of the fixed-roof version, complete with the captivating Ferrari V6 sound that enthusiasts appreciate. Enhanced with additional carbon-fiber reinforcement in key areas like the A-pillars, B-pillars, and sills, the 296 GTS offers 50% more rigidity compared to the F8 Tributo Spider. Despite the challenges associated with incorporating a retractable hard top, the aerodynamic efficiency of the 296 GTS is maintained through the wing profile and flying buttresses, ensuring optimal performance and thermal management similar to the 296 GTB model.

The Ferrari 296 GTS features the same mid-mounted 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine as its 296 GTB counterpart, configured with a 120-degree angle between the cylinder banks to accommodate the twin turbos. This design offers advantages such as a lower center of gravity, reduced engine mass, and impressive power outputs. Additionally, the engine is coupled with a plug-in hybrid electric motor positioned between the engine and the eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

The PHEV setup demonstrates remarkable effectiveness in seamlessly blending petrol and electric power, resulting in relentless acceleration even at partial throttle. Together, they generate an impressive 830hp at 8,000rpm (with a redline of 8,500rpm) and peak torque of 740Nm at 6,250rpm. This powertrain configuration not only delivers exceptional performance but also showcases the harmonious integration of hybrid technology to enhance the driving experience in the Ferrari 296 GTS. In addition, the V6 plug-in hybrid can drive on purely electric power in eDrive mode for up to 25km and at speeds of up to 135km/h.

Tapping the capacitive button on the steering wheel wakes up the driver’s display, though it keeps things refreshingly simple. By default, the 296 GTS starts in Hybrid mode, but if you’re craving pure adrenaline, switch to Qualify mode. Not only does it deliver maximum performance, but it also ensures efficient battery charging — the best of both worlds. Twist the Manettino dial from Sport to Race mode, and the car sharpens up beautifully. The throttle, gearbox, and steering become more responsive, giving you an edge in every maneuver. The eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) is a masterpiece. Even in automatic mode, it can drop two gears in the blink of an eye — especially in Sport. But nothing compares to taking control manually in the 296 GTS. It’s a uniquely satisfying experience, making you feel more deeply connected to the car, as though you are part of the Ferrari legacy itself. Hit a tight, winding road, and this is where the 296 GTS truly shines. The steering feels impossibly precise, and the car dances around corners with an eagerness that dares you to push it harder. Brake later, hit the accelerator sooner, and listen as the engine roars and the turbochargers whistle. It’s a visceral rush, like the universe itself is urging you forward with divine force.

You are bathed in the sounds and scents of your surroundings, while the high-pitched vibrato of the engine reverberates off rock faces and buildings. It’s a symphony of speed, heightened by the environment around you. When it’s time to wind down and head home, simply switch to Bumpy Road mode. The car smooths out, with the central computer managing the balance between electric and petrol power seamlessly. For a low-slung supercar, the ride comfort is extraordinary, and cruising at 100 km/h is surprisingly quiet, with road noise kept impressively under control.

The 296 GTS is a marvel of versatility — a car that feels like it has multiple personalities and captivating.
